Session #103 · 1993–95

Speech #1030066230

As required by the gentlemans amendment. yes. but he is trying to turn all of the rellgious and nonreligious. nonprofit organizations that participate in this program into. as the gentleman from California said. "spies for the INS." I agree with everybody that said they do not like the idea of illegal aliens. I voted for immigration reform in this Congress. and the immigration law now prohibits employers from blindly hiring anybody that comes along without asking their status. At first. the amendment appeared to prevent the hiring of people who were illegals. Now I discover that it is providing any service to anyone who is Illegal. It goes even further than that. It says that the service provider must have a policy saying if. in fact. somebody tells us. or we ask them. and they say they are an undocumented person. we will turn them in to the INS. I submit to the gentleman that the churches of this country are not going to do that. They are not going to be able to meet the requirements of the gentlemans amendment.
