Speaker. like many other countries in Eastern and Central Europe. Bulgaria has undergone tremendous change in recent years. Democratic elections in June 1990 ushered in the first nonCommunist government since World War II. Bulgaria has adopted a major economic reform program. and joined the International Monetary Fund in September 1990. Finally. Bulgaria has adopted a policy of free emigration for its citizens. Bulgarias trade with the Soviet Union has virtually collapsed. to the great detriment of the Bulgarian economy. In order to improve its peoples living conditions. the Bulgarian Government is hoping to establish much closer trade and economic ties with the United States and other western countries.
