Over the past 20 years. Mr. Speaker. the number of Asian Pacific Americans has more than quadrupled. from 1.5 million people in 1970 to more than 6.5 million today. Of that increase. over 4 million were new immigrants. In the past. it has been standard practice to treat Asian and Pacific Islander Americans as a single. homoge. nous group. Nothing could be further from the truth.
