Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010170234

We would put the flag up on our front porch. plan a picnic. watch the parade. standing proudly at attention as the numerous flags passed by. and then gather at dusk for the fireworks at Edgewater Park. It was. and is. the quintessential family holiday. I am reminded of this because today would have been my parents 59th wedding anniversary. But there was another reason the 4th of July was important to me and my family. It was also my fathers birthday. Yesterday was the anniversary of my fathers death. God bless him. But. my father. an immigrant. always took a special delight in the 4th of July and the pomp and ceremony surrounding the flag. He kidded us kids by saying he thought the Nation was celebrating his birthday with him. At least.
