Is the flag important enough to be afforded protection under the Constitutionthats the issue. h it important enough as a symbol of our national unity. Important enough as a symbol of the 1 million Americans who gave their lives in combat. Important enough as a symbol to 21/ million service men and women now serving around the world. and is it Important enough as a symbol of freedom and democracy. especially for our children. or the immigrant arriving on our Nations shores? We pass laws In our society that prohibit leaf burning in our backyards. we make it a Federal offense to tamper with someones mailbox. yet we are unwilling to supply ample protection for our Nations flag. The amendment before us Is about desecration and burning of this symbol.
