On June 14. 1941. the Soviet Union began its forced deportation of thousands of Baltic citizens under the direction of Joseph Stalin. During that night. more than 40.000 Baltic citizens were arrested. Many died. and the rest were deported to concentration camps in Siberia. Over the next 8 years. over 600.000 Baltic citizens were lost through arrest and deportation. Todays date symbolizes the hardships endured by the Baltic peoples during 50 years of Soviet occupation.
