I met privately with President Salinas and members of the bipartisan congressional border caucus. whose members have districts on or near the United StatesMexico border. or are interested in United StatesMexico relations. The issue of free trade dominated the discussions. although other issues were brought up as well. notably the environment. human rights of migrant farmworkers. and the need to cooperate on auto thefts. which have become rampant along the border. At this point. however. I believe that we should take this opportunity to point out the long. complex path that lies in front of achieving any kind of free trade agreement with Mexico.
