Yesterday. the House of Representatives voted to override the Presidents veto by the overwhelming bipartisan margin of: 390 to 25. Today. the Senate will also have the opportunity to vote for democracy in Chinato stand with the courageous Chinese students. and to express our abhorrence of the brutality of the Chinese leaders. It was wrong to veto the bill. which would have provided the Chinese students in America with the full protection of immigration law. The administration has announced that it will provide the same protections which the bill would establish. But no amount of explanation can refute the fact that a congressional statute will provide greater protection than executive action.
