Speech #1010093408

Mr. Speaker. I am an American of Greek descent. and as such I am quite familiar with the formidable obstacles that stood before the first Arab immigrants to Americaproblems of language and religious differences and of a culture and traditions quite different from those of mainstream America. Compounding this. the vast majority of these Immigrantslike those from Greecewere predominantly poor. and many more were unskilled in ways that would benefit them in their new country. Unfortunately. as with other minorities. they faced Intolerance and discrimination. as well. but these immigrants knew that America nevertheless offered freedom and opportunityand they were willing to accept the challenges before them. Today. as I mentioned earlier. ArabAmericans have woven themselves into the fabric of Amedcaas bakers and lawyers. farmworkers and engineers. doctors and businessmen. entertainers and steelworkers.
