Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010050518

On this anniversary. we must recommit ourselves. as representatives of the American people. to find a peaceful solution to the longstanding problems on the island. The administration should put the Cyprus issue on the front burner and solve that bothersome problem once and for all. The 1974 military operation killed thousands and displaced over 150.000 Cypriots who became refugees in their own country. Many are still missing as the result of that invasion. including a number of Americans who have not been seen since that fateful day. There were 60.000 Turkish settlers brought to Cyprus. and nearly 30.000 Turkish soldiers still occupy the northern part of the Island.
