Mr. Speaker. today marks the anniversary of a tragedy. Fifteen years ago today Turkish forces invaded the island nation of Cyprus. beginning an illegal occupation which continues to this day. Four thousand Greek Cypriots lost their lives and 200.000 more were made refugees as a result of this invasion. Today. Turkish troops occupy more than a third of Cyprus. The Turkish presence on Cyprus is particularly disturbing to me because Turkey is a member of NATO and an ally of the United States. However. Turkey has illegally used weapons supplied by the United States to maintain its occupation of Cyprus.
