Mr. President. I am pleased to rise today in support of legislation which would give the fullest possible consideration to asylum applications from Chinese nationals who express a fear of persecution because of that countrys one couple. one child family planning policy. Under Chinas coercive birth control policy. a Chinese family is restricted to having only one child. If a woman becomes pregnant with a second child. she is forced to undergo an abortioneven in the final months of pregnancy. Harsh penalties await those who act with their conscience and refuse to abort a childs life. Workers are fired and funds for the family are cut off by the Government.
