Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990286009

Mr. President. I shall propose an amendment to H.R. 1452. the Housepassed version of the refugee reauthorization bill. The purpose of this legislation is to reauthorize. for 2 years. the domestic resettlement programs for refugees that we admit from abroad. The legislation passed the House over a year ago. and despite inclusion of funding for these programs on the continuing resolution. I feel we should dispose of this bill. The administration has objected to certain portions of the House passed bill. and the Senate Judiciary Committee bill is somewhat different. so my amendment would alter somewhat the house bill. while retaining its overall character. The amendment would first. preserve line items for social services and medical screening. but delete the line item for targeted assistance. second. delete the requirement that refugees be given presumptive Medicaid eligibility for 1 year. and third. delete a provision that moves the Office of Refugee Resettlement into the Office of the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Mr. President.
