Speech #990286014

Mr. President. I am pleased to support the passage of legislation that would reauthorize. for 2 years. the programs that assist in the domestic resettlement of the many refugees that we admit from abroad each year. The bill would reauthorize. for 2 years. the domestic resettlement programs. grant a "such sums" authorization for cash and medical assistance. provide specific line items for social services and medical screening. impose new requirements on the voluntary agencies that help resettle these refugees. provide for the reimbursement of certain State and local incarceration costs with respect to Mariel felons. and make other necessary adjustments in our U.S. Refugee Program. This bill was passed by the House over 1 year ago. While the Senate Judiciary Committee reported its legislation in June 1985. the legislation was not brought to the floor because of difficulties in resolving some of the particular provisions of the bill.
