Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990271782

President. this summer saw renewed national pride in the Statue of Liberty. and the ideals for which she stands. In New Jersey living in the shadow of the great monument. we take special pride in the statue. As the son of immigrant parents who entered the United States through Ellis Island. the statue has great personal significance for me as well. New Jerseyans have had a special role in the history of the statue. In 1886. it was President Grover Cleveland. a New Jersey native. who. on behalf of all Americans. officially accepted the Statue of Liberty from the people of France.
