Cancer institutes in Israel. the United States. Sweden. and France have invited Inna to receive experimental treatment. All that is requested of the Soviet authorities is to grant her at least a temporary exit visa. The Soviets have repeatedly refused. Like Inna. the condition of Soviet Jewry has continued to deteriorate. Harassment. arrests. and imprison. ment of Jews seeking to emigrate or study their peoples language and heritage have become increasingly frequent. This cannot be tolerated. Soviet denial of the Meimans request to emigrate is completely unJustified. The theory is that the Meimans are not permitted to leave because of the scientific work Naum once did. That scientific work ended in 1955. and any graduate student in that field today has much more current knowledge than he has. Surely the Soviets must realize that this is not a political matter. By allowing the Meimans permission to emigrate. the Soviet authorities can make a wonderful humanitarian gesture of saving an innocent life. I implore the Soviet authorities to allow the Meimans to live their remaining days in freedom before it is too late.*
