President. the world witnessed a spectacular sight in 1886 as freedomloving people from the world over gathered in New York Harbor to celebrate the dedication of the Statue of Liberty. Her torch was lit as a beacon of hope and as an expression of friendship to all people. Shortly thereafter the doors of Ellis Island were opened to millions of immigrants who passed by the Statue of Liberty on their way to settle in AmerIca. The United States is sometimes called the nation of immigrants because it has received more immigrants than any other country in history. They have helped make the United States the huge. powerful. and wealthy Nation that it is today. They have helped build the rich heritage of our cities and communities. Mr. President. in recognition of the immigrants who came and settled in America. especially of those who have made Long Island their home. Savings of America has launched an effort to preserve their legacy. So much of Long Islands wealth is the rich history of its residents. many of whom arrived there from distant lands and whose characters and commitment helped build the fine communities in which they live.
