At the conclusion of the 5day trial. sentence was pronounced13 years in prison and labor camp for treason. espionage. and antiSoviet agitation. His final words in the Moscow courtroom were directed to his wife Avital. "Next year in Jerusalem." Avital. the sister of a fellow Soviet dissident. had been granted permission to emigrate to Israel the day after their marriage in 1974. The state. however. refused to permit Shcharansky to join her.
