Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990175397

A pluralistic society with respect for freedom of religion. association. and expression. and An impartial and orderly judicial system. That is what the Sandinistas promised. What they produced is what these socalled revolutions always produce: Broken promises. A shattered economy. Political repression on a scale previously unknown in Nicaragua. Expanding prisons. and. oh yes. waves of refugees. The revelations made by Alvaro Baldizon. Arturo Cruz. and other defectors who had inside knowledge of the inner workings of the Sandinista regime add up to a striking group portrait of men who are desperately clinging to power and living in fear of the very people that they ostensibly liberated.
