In 1906. the San Francisco earthquake and fire destroyed a major portion of the city. but the Japanese Presbyterian Church building. located on Haight Street survived the fire and it served as an emergency shelter for the victims of the disaster. The 1920s marked a nadir in the history of the church for it was the period of many antiJapanese agitations and activities. AntiJapanese immigration acts pro!ibited the further Immigration of Japanese to the United States and during this era. the churchs role was to unify and serve as one of the spokespersons for the JapaneseAmerican community and to combat the antagonism and prejudices of that period.
