I would like to share its unique history and experience with my colleagues. The First Japanese Presbyterian Church had its origins in a nondenominational independent Japanese Christian organization called the Fukuin Kai or the Gospel Society. This group. which was formed in 1877. served as a place of study and religious instruction. as well as a settlement establishment assisting newly arrived immigrants from Japan in employment. housing. English instruction and various types of charitable causes. Eight years later. on May 16. 1885. the f!:st Japanese Presbyterian Church in the United States was formed which consisted of several members of the Fukiin Kai.
