Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990020955

We met during that trip with educators. with priests. with nuns. with business leaders. and with members of the Government and former members of the Government. and with the exception of the leaders of the Communist Nicaraguan Government. every single person with whom I talked said that if aid to the Contras. the freedom fighters in Nicaragua. is cut off. the Communists will solidify their position. the repressions will increase. and they will be exporting revolution throughout Central America. That borders upon endangering the security of the United States of AmerIca. If that revolution expands beyond the borders of Nicaragua. we all know there will be literally millions of refugees fleeing Central America and coming through Mexico and into Texas and the United States. This will result in hardship on the American economy. Can we imagine what it would be like. Mr. Speaker. if we had 10 million to 20 million refugees in this country. trying to house them. feed them. educate them. and clothe them? And. of course. they will be wanting Jobs. and they will be willing to work for $1 or $2 or $3 an hour. much less than what Americans are being paid. And that. in my opinion.
