Machito was more than a great talent. he was an innovator in musical techniques and in crossing cultural boundaries. He was best known for bringing a Latin beat to jazz. and for being the first to add the conga drum to a dance band. Machito was Cuban born and immigrated to the United States in 1937. Originally he worked as a backup singer and a maracas player in Cuba. When he immigrated to America he refused to give up his musical or cultural heritage. Machito quickly fell in love with the big band sound of swing. Applying his musical genius to the craft he loved so much. he created his own band called the AfroCubans made up of both black and Latin musicians.
