We were not quite sure what we were frightened of. but we violated many. many constitutional liberties by simply rounding up people in their homes because we thought they might be Communist. And then. of course. the greatest abuse in my judgment. probably the greatest abuse. in the history of this country of constitutional rights is the placing in concentration camps during World War II of Americans of Japanese ancestry solely because of their Japanese ancestry. And I emphasize Americans of Japanese ancestry. these were not illegal immigrants. These were not naturalized citizens. These were native. Americanborn citizens whose ancestry happened to be Japanese. I come from the State of Oregon on the west coast. We are long familiar with Asian immigration. It started on the west coast in the 1860s. 1870s. 1880s. We have many. many second. third. fourth generation Asian families.
