On May 7. 1832. with the signing of the Treaty of London which declared Greece an independent kingdom. that dream was fulfilled. The United States and the whole of Western civilization is indebted to the Greek cultural traditions of democracy and freedom of expression and thought. Our Founding Fathers created a system of government based largely on the ideals of Plato and Aristotle and on the structure of the Greek citystates. The teachings of such schola.s and Socrates and Hippocrates have formed the basis of our Nation. The United States is fortunate to have incorporated into its populace thousands of immigrants from Greece.
