Other effects of the devaluation were a loss of sales tax revenues that provide indispensible city services to the many underprivileged and the beginning of a massive influx of undocumented workers searching for a better life in America. Today. 2 years later. the economic indicators in this region remain quite grim. In comparison to the 888.000 Mexican nationals that crossed the bridge at Brownsville for Christmas shopping in 1981. the figure for December 1983 is still down by 175.000.
