Eventually. the Soviet Union drove the Germans out of Latvia. but then forceably incorporated Latvia into the Soviet Union as one of Its republics. The ensuing actions of the Soviet Union constitute one of the most ruthless cases of political suppression in European history. Only handpicked Soviet Sympathizers were allowed to serve in office. Tens of thousands of native Latvians were deported. A systematic policy of Russian emigration promised to make Latvians a minority in their own country. Today the sad plight of the Latvians continues: The Soviet Union exploits their industriousness. suppresses their art. and even threatens their native tongue. Lettish. with calculated extinction.
