As we observe the 65th anniversary of Latvian Independence Day. we are acutely aware that Latvians are not permitted to celebrate this historic day. In 1944 the Baltic nation of Latvia was incorporated into the Soviet Union. The history of the Latvian nation is one of a land divided amongst aggressors and repressors. Latvia has been under the control of Germany. Sweden. and now of course is under Russian rule for the the second time. When the Soviets reconquered the land during World War II. it deported thousands of Latvians to Siberia. In their place loyal Russian colonists were sent to settle. A systematic russification of the people. culture. and land was set in motion.
