Independence was brutally stripped from the brave people of Latvia in 1940. a fate that also befell neighboring Baltic States of Lithuania and Estonia. The perpetrator of this horror was the army of the Soviet Union. In June of 1941. a massive deportation of thousands of Latvians. Lithuanians. and Estonians by the Soviets to Siberia resuited in more than 600.000 deaths. That was not the final chapter in the grisly Soviet campaign to eradicate all traces of the onceindependent Baltic States. It continues with full force even today. Any attempt by Latvians to celebrate national culture and traditions are harshly attacked by Soviet occupation forces. and participants are jailed and beaten.
