Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980140953

Mr. Speaker. it gives me great pride to join my colleagues in commemorating the 65th anniversary of Latvian Independence Day. Todays special order demonstrates that we in Congress have not lost interest in the plight of the oppressed people who live under Soviet domination in the oncefree nation of Latvia. We stand with them. their families and friends who have emigrated to the United States. We are in solidarity with their struggle to be free. During its 22 years of freedom and independence from 1918 to 1940. Latvia was an internationally recognized member of the League of Nations. Her people knew the feeling of freedom. and the prosperity and vitality it brought to their lives.
