Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970224248

I am not prepared to extend the program to what may be a million people who have come to the country since that date and who in that short period of time. in my judgment. have not established that equity. I have tried to say to my friends particularly on this side of the aisle. who are opposed to any legalization. Listen. a lot of these people are part of the community. they have established equity. It is a matter of justice. There is precedent in previous legislation. other times that Immigration legislation has passed in which we have legalized people. Those are the answers I feel confident in giving to the Senator and I am not expecting him necessarily to agree with them because I know the Senator feels strongly.
