Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970157365

I am disheartened that a peaceful resolution for this continuing conflict has not yet been realized. The Turkish Cypriots. representing only 18 percent of the Cypriot population are still forcibly holding 40 percent of Cyprus at bay. Two hundred thousand Greek Cypriots remain homeless refugees. compelled to relinquish most or all of their possessions by Turkish forces. It is past the time to put an end to such oppression and injustice. In a world of growing international complexities. when a seemingly local incident may proliferate into one with international ramifications. a final resolution to the Cypriot conflict is of immediate importance.
