Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970157363

As a nation. we neither condone nor accept the occupation of a sovereign nation by the army of another nation. We must be as concerned about the invasion of Cyprus by Turkey as we would be about the occupation of any other country. It is my firm belief that the administration should do everything in its power to end this tragic situation and return the Greek Cypriot refugees to their homes. As long as the Turkish military occupy that country. the in. stability of the eastern Mediterranean will act against the best interests of the United States. But. above all else. the Cypriot people will continue to endure undue economic hardship and human rights violations. Our foreign policy in this region must be directed toward a Just and lasting settlement. Selfdetermination is a basic rightand a right which has. for the past 8 years. been denied to the Cypriots. As the leader of the free world. our Nation not only has a moral obligation but an ethical commitment to work for a political settlement for the people of Cyprus. who have been refugees of their own homeland for much too long.*
