I am sorry to record that. with one notable exception. the plight of the captive nations has not improved in the last year. Surely the worst off is the newest captive nation. Afghanistan. Almost 2 million Afghans are refugees in Pakistan and elsewhere. The Soviet Union continues to use its vast and sophisticated war machine against the proud Afghans who continue the fight against armor and helicopter gunships armed only with homemade boltaction rifles. Yet such is the strength of the Afghan resistance and the difficulty of the Afghan countryside that even the Soviets have been held to a long and arduous campaign. one which they show few signs of quickly winning.
