Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970055519

In cherishing our own freedom. we must not turn our backs on the freedom of men and women elsewhere. Several weeks ago. Dr. Viktor Brailovsky was sentenced to 5 years of internal exile. His only crime was his desire to emigrate to Israel and to carry on his scientific research unimpeded by Soviet authorities. This incident. which is only one of many that have taken place. reminds us of the cruelty of the Soviet regime. which oppresses not just its own citizens. but the millions of individuals dominated by the U.S.S.R. in Eastern Europe. It is vital that we do not forget these struggling people.
