The Office of Special Investigations has been established in the Criminal Division of the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute alleged war criminals. The U.S. Government has been directed by Congress to investigate and prosecute Nazi war criminals living in the United States. not to demand punishment or imprisonment for these crimes. but for the purpose of their denaturalization and deportation. The failure on the part of the U.S. Government to act promptly and firmly in these cases could be interpreted as a statement that we were willing to condone the crimes of the holocaust. allowing these heinous crimes to be forgotten. perhaps even repeated.
