Mr. Speaker. today the oldest police stationhouse in the city of New York celebrates its 100th anniversary of service to the citizens of Little Italy and Chinatown. The fifth precinct stationhouse has played an important role in serving the many tens of thousands of immigrants arriving in this country since the 1880s. Over the years. a strong and active community council has developed whose members live and work within the boundaries of the fifth precinct. In a great "meltingpot" city like New York. the fifthhas been able to respond to problems within the community in a personal way. It is the only precinct in New York which has a Chinesespeaking police officer.
