Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970003049

And in January of last year. the Washington Star reported that "of the 2.500 Americans who are unaccounted for in Southeast Asia. all but 38 have been declared presumptively dead by the U.S. Government." The Washington Star went on to say that many of the families of POWs missing in action object to these findings and are still waiting and hoping. The Defense Intelligence Agency. which evaluates refugee reports. says that the United States should not rule out the possibility that American prisoners are being held in Vietnam. but stresses that it has been impossible to verify these stories and difficult to address the integrity of the refugees who give the accounts. I feel that. even if there is only circumstantial evidence which would lead one to believe that American servicemen are alive in Southeast Asiaregardless of how small the number may bewe have an obligation to these men and their families to investigate. And I think we should continue to investigate until we have no doubts as to their whereabouts.
