Speech #930128017

Although the fact is not widely recognized. that impact began 12 years before the arrival of the Mayflowerwhen a tiny band of Polish artisans arrived in Jamestown. sent by the Virginia Company to share their industrial expertise with the colonists. It is possible that their presence among the "gentlemen adventurers" in the colony decided the course of history. Certainly. their energy was notable and the results impressive. within 3 weeks a glass factory was in operation and soon a saw mill. soap works. and tar and pitch distillery were underway. Capt. John Smith praised these Polish immigrants highly and credited them with much of the success of the colony. These men in Jamestown set a high standard for settlers in the centuries to come. And it is a standard which has been upheld.
