Dalip Saund was determined to translate to modern government the ideals upon which America was founded. Once denied citizenship in the United States and the right to own land. Dalip enthusiastically assumed the mantle of leadership to change Federal law which discriminated against persons of Asiatic ancestry. In 1942 he helped organize and became the first president of the India Association of America which sought to obtain citizenship for East Indian residents of the United States. Through unswerving dedication and resourcefulness Dalip Saund was prominently responsible for the successful passage of a bill. cosponsored by Representatives Emanuel Celler and Claire Booth Luce. permitting persons born in Asia to become U.S. citizens. What a proud and joyous day for Dalip Saund when he was naturalized in 1949. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1956. Judge Saund conscientiously devoted his 6year tenure in this body to the cause of civil liberty and rights for all Americans.
