Dalip Saund graduated from the University of Punjab and migrated to the United States. where he arrived at the age of 20. Here he renewed his education. receiving a doctorate in mathematics at the University of California. Ineligible at that time. as an Indian. for American citizenship. he became the first president of the Indian Association of America which was largely instrumental in promoting an amendm 3nt to the U.S. immigration laws permitting the nationalization of Indian nationals. This was accomplished in 1946. by which time Dalip Saund had become a successful rancher and fertilizer dealer in the Imperial Valley of California. As a community leader he was persuaded to accept a nomination for justice of the peace in the Westmorland District. to which post he was elected in 1953.
