Mr. President. for more than a year. civil war in Nigeria has divided a once promising federation and produced human destruction of gigantic proportions. Each day journalists and cameramen. missionaries and relief workers. dispatch to an uncomprehending world the cold. appalling facts of the awesome tragedy: some 4.000.000 refugees. nearly all wandering fearful and penniless through the bush. casualties some 10 times greater than those in Vietnam. and over a million children. and thousands of others. dying of starvation at a rate which has grown from 300 a day in early summer to well over 7.000 a day at the present time. This toll in human suffering is centered in what is left of Biafra and In the traditional Ibo lands of Eastern Nigeria. reoccupied by Federal forces from Lagos. My immediate concern todaya concern deeply shared by many Americansis the incredible condition of mass starvation and death.
