The march was not particularly important from a military standpoint. although some successful artillery engagements did take place. But from the standpoint of trailblazing and exploration. it was significant. The battalion located the most feasible route between Sante Fe and the west coast. a route that was later followed by thousands of immigrants and two continental railroads. the Sante Fe and the Southern Pacific. Colonel Cooke. in paying tribute to the battalion at the end of the campaign. said: History may be searched in vain for an equal march of infantry. Ninetenths of it has been through wilderness. where nothing but savages and wild beasts are found. or deserts where. for want of water. there are no living creatures ...
