Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880078034

No. 2 would depict Castle Clinton as the last of a series of forts. from the time of the Dutch settlement in 1624. which guarded lower Manhattan. and was headquarters of Gen. Winfield Scott during the War of 1812. which 150th anniversary period is now being observed. No. 3 would depict the American Museum of Immigration now being constructed so as to complete the base of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. which museum is to tell the story of the making of the United States by men and women who have come to our shores from all over the world to seek and find the blessings of life. liberty. and the pursuit of happiness. I believe that no similar series of U.S. commemorative historic medals such. as this proposed liberty series has ever before been requested of or issued through the Bureau of the Mint of the Treasury Department. I am aware that proper officials there have expressed their unqualified interest and approval if the Congress will take the necessary legislative action at this time.
