Pakistan has. indeed. experienced more than its share of trouble and turmoil. The period after independence was one of bloodshed and massacre as 6 million people fled from India to Pakistan and a similar number in the opposite direction. The relations between Pakistans two wings have not always been easy. There have been serious difficulties between Pakistan and India over the continuing flight of refugees. the quarrel over Kashmir. and the waters of the Indus River. In October 1958 the Pakistan Army seized power in a swift coup detat. Corruption and inefficiency almost everywhere had brought political and economic chaos to the country.
