Speech #880003409

Mr. President. each year in January it is my privilege to commemorate the anniversary of the Ukrainian Republic which was proclaimed on January 22. 1918. and which endured a brief. and stormy. 2 years. This republic was the incarnation of an ideal cherished for centuries. and which persists today despite the systematic denationalization. deportation. and starvation practiced by its Kremlin rulers. From their first association with the empire of Moscow by the treaty of Pereyaslav in 1654. Moscow has striven in vain to deny the cultural integrity of the Ukrainian nation which constantly and courageously resurges. Briefly. let me retrace some of the determining events in Ukrainian history.
