I am very happy that the Senator from Illinois has permitted me to be a cosponsor of the amendment. and I wish to congratulate him upon his very able presentation of this complicated subject. I regret very much that it has been necessary to omit many of the reforms in the immigration laws which have been so strongly urged by the President of the United States ever since he has been in office. I supported all the reforms which he has recommended and for which the Senator from Utah and the Senator from Illinois have so ardently fought. There is comfort in this bill for families. many of whom are in my State. I was glad to hear the Senator from Illinois point out the favorable effect of section 5 of the bill upon immigration from Poland and from Italy and from Sweden. for example. I am very happy that. while the pending proposal does not provide nearly the amount of relief which should be provided in connection vrith the unusedquota problem. it does definitely-
