The representatives of the Jewish Agency and the Arab Higher Committee of Palestine both testified. The Jewish Agency representative claimed that the establishment of the Jewish national home was to have been the process. while the Jewish commonwealth would be the consummation of Jewish aspirations in Palestine. He asked for an open door to immigration and land settlement in Palestine for the displaced and utterly desperate Jews in Europe. But the Arab position was of special interest due to its peculiar intransigeance. The representative of the Palestine Arab Higher Committee said that the Arabs will not consider or even discuss the meaning of the Jewish national home. that they want immediate and complete stoppage of all immigration into Palestine and refuse. in advance. any solutionlike partitionimpairing or diminishing Arab sovereignty in the whole or any part of Palestine. My experience here reported follows an exchange of correspondence on Palestine with Secretary of State Marshall by 30 Members on the Republican side of the -House of whom I was one. We asked Secretary Marshall three questions. all directed toward ascertaining the United States policy with respect to the instant proceedings before the United Nations Assembly on Palestine.
