Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800015066

I want to bring this letter to the attention of the House. It is signed by the chairman of the committee. and it states: DEAR MR. ATTORNEY GENERAL: During each session of the Congress the Government is put to a great deal of embarrassment and expense through the introduction of private bills relating to immigration and naturalization. The committee is aware that in many cases your Department stays deportation proceedings and is otherwise harassed because of the mere introduction of these bills. We feel this situation is in need of correction. Accordingly. unless the committee addresses some formal communication to you after the introduction of any such bill or bills. you may feel free to disregard the practice of staying deportation proceedings. This letter is written pursuant to a resolution passed by the House Judiciary Committee at a session this morning and Is not a letter of the chairman but is the letter of the committee. Now. since when has the Judiciary Committee usurped that authority?
