We can properly differ on this question without having anyone charge that we are not endeavoring to legislate for the best good of the country. and after all our first and last duty is to legislate for America. That is what I ptopose. that is what this amendment proposes. I would be the last man here to suggest an amendment which would let the bars down. I really would not object myself if you closed the ports for a couple of years to all immigration. [Applause.1 I believe I could vote for that and I say now frankly that I would vote for it. and I would prefer to vote for that than to vote for the proposal which the committee makes.
